    CT COLT is excited to present a series of five webinars for the 2024-2025 school year, themed "Connecting Our World Through Sustainable Development Goals."

    We’re continuing our series with the second session Empower Gen Z with Action: Motivating students with UN SDGs featuring Lea Graner Kennedy. Lea is an accomplished instructional leader in World Languages, with experience as a teacher, administrator, and consultant. She works with K-12 students and K-16 educators to enhance curriculum, assessment, and instruction, ensuring access to high-quality language programs aligned with World-Readiness Standards, Social Justice Standards, and UN Sustainable Development Goals. Lea is passionate about leading curriculum development and providing engaging, research-based professional learning that empowers teachers to grow in their practice using high-leverage teaching strategies.

    Session abstract:

    Explore units connected to UN SDGs that empower students to become multilingual, global citizens that make an impact. Gen Z Students are activists, motivated to make a difference in their communities and the world. We will explore strategies to maintain TL use and engage students through action and global challenges.

    Join us on Tuesday, January 28 at 5:00 pm for a webinar with Dr. Marta Adán on strategies to empower Spanish heritage language learners (HLLs) through thematic units designed to spark their inner activist. Discover how literacy-focused classrooms can foster sustainable change by centering students' identities. Learn about a capstone project framework rooted in social justice standards, enabling students to take ownership of their learning through year-long research and advocacy projects. This presentation offers invaluable insights for creating impactful learning experiences in both L2 and Spanish heritage classrooms.

    Dr. Marta Adán, is a dynamic heritage Spanish speaker and educator at CREC’s Academy of Aerospace and Engineering. A visionary leader in language education, Dr. Adán developed a district-wide Spanish heritage speaker pathway and was a 2023 CREC Teacher of the Year nominee. Known for her innovative curriculum design, she empowers language learners through identity-focused instruction and a social justice lens.

    This webinar, co-hosted by the AATSP, the fourth in a ten-part series for the 2024-2025 school year in collaboration with our partner organizations. These webinars will feature presenters sharing valuable insights, including information about their organizations, member benefits, pedagogical strategies, and topics closely related to their fields.

    Join us on Thursday, January 30th at 5:00 pm for a webinar with Kazumi Yamashita-Iverson and Emiko Nomoto. This dynamic one-hour presentation will focus on achieving 90% or more target language use in effective world language instruction. Discover how intentional planning, creative strategies, and a supportive classroom culture can help sustain target language use.

    Kazumi has been teaching Japanese at Maloney Interdistrict Magnet School in Waterbury for 23 years, working with students from Pre-K through 5th grade. She has served on the NCJLT and AATJ boards and currently represents AATJ at CT COLT. Emiko has been teaching Japanese at Maloney Interdistrict Magnet School since 2019. She is dedicated to creating an engaging classroom environment where students feel inspired to explore new cultures and languages.

    CT COLT is excited to present a series of five webinars for the 2024-2025 school year, themed "Connecting Our World Through Sustainable Development Goals."

    We’re continuing our series with the third session Ocean Voices: Bridging Bilingual Education and Ocean Literacy featuring Catherine Haase and Jamie Mack. Catherine is a Spanish teacher and World Language Department Chair at Torrington High School, now in her 14th year of teaching. She strives to create a welcoming classroom with engaging, creative lessons and holds degrees in Secondary Education, Spanish, Romance Languages, and Educational Leadership. This year, CT COLT proudly recognizes her as the 2024-2025 Language Teacher of the Year! 

    Session abstract:

    In this session, participants will explore how to foster community connections and raise environmental awareness through interdisciplinary connections between World Languages and other disciplines. Through connections with UN Sustainable Development Goals, participants will gain practical tips for how to empower climate advocacy, as well as learn about examples of interdisciplinary grants.

    CT COLT is excited to present a series of five webinars for the 2024-2025 school year, themed "Connecting Our World Through Sustainable Development Goals."

    We’re continuing our series with the fourth session Redesigning Classroom Opportunities for Global Change Using the SDGs featuring Jimmy Wildman and Molly Murphy. Jimmy Wildman is the Head Teacher in the World Language Department at Glastonbury Public Schools and teaches Spanish at Glastonbury High School. He is deeply involved in all language programs and currently serves as the Immediate Past Chair of NECTFL and Executive Director for CT COLT. Molly Murphy has been teaching Spanish for 23 years in Glastonbury, CT, and is an experienced curriculum developer who designs lessons that integrate the UN SDGs and amplify student voices. She holds a BA in Spanish and Economics, along with a Master’s in Economics.

    Session abstract:

    This session will focus on how to use the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to engage students in meaningful and interesting projects of personal interest. Come and learn how the presenters have redesigned the curriculum to focus through the lens of human rights and global engagement.

    We’re wrapping up our series with the final session Breaking Barriers: Using the Global Goals to Collaborate! featuring Noemí Rodríguez. Noemí Rodríguez-Grimshaw (@team_lologramos) is a veteran language educator and founder of Lo Logramos Consulting. With over 15 years of experience, she specializes in curriculum, assessment, technology, and communication strategies. An award-winning teacher, Noemí has presented at conferences worldwide and is committed to helping educators develop proficiency-based language programs.

    Session abstract:

    This session addresses the conference theme, "Connecting Our World Through Sustainable Development Goals," by equipping educators with current, high-leverage practices that leverage technology for impactful learning. This workshop aligns with the increasing focus on education for sustainable development (ESD) and global citizenship within language learning (https://www.unesco.org/en/sustainable-development/education ). Participants gain practical skills with effective online collaboration tools for global classrooms, a valuable asset in the increasingly interconnected world. Overall, this session provides educators with the tools and strategies to create engaging, relevant, and impactful learning experiences that empower students to become active global citizens.
